Wed 13. [13 December 1899] Better. Spent the morning unpacking
and arranging my rooms which are now most comfortable. Grey and
pleasant day. Lunched with the Rs. Then Dr R and I walked all round
the town outside the walls. We went in at the Jaffa gate, out by the
Coenacolun [sic] which we visited, all along the top of the Valley of
Jehoshaphat and so round to the Dominican monastery where we
heard an intelligent monk lecture on coins. The Dicksons were there
and the Greek consul with a nice little boy. Introduced to Pere la
Grange who is the Superior of the Monastery. Mr FitzGerald there in a
long black gown. Back to tea and so home where I wrote letters till
dinner.
