Back to the Jaffa gate, where I met Mr Macalister and his son, rather a ruffian) through the crowded Bazaars to the Damascus Gate, then by the Via Dolorosa to the Salahieh to order butter. Past Herod's House and the Pool of Bethesda. Home by the Damascus Gate, a beautiful piece of Saracen work, at 12. Dr R. and I then interviewed horses. A bay I liked very much. After lunch Charlotte he and I rode, I on a bad little pony belonging to the hotel, up Mt Scopas, onto the Mt of Olives where we climbed up a minaret and had a wonderful view of the Dead Sea [(Yah Hamelah, Bahret Lut)] and Jerusalem [(El Quds esh Sherif, Yerushalayim)]. In the Mosque is an imprint of Christ's foot on the rock. So down to Bethany ['Eizariya], passing Herr Bauernfeind who was painting on the way. We climbed down into Lazarus' grave by a narrow steep stair. It is a vaulted chamber presumably 7th cent. So home by the Valley of Jehoshaphat and the walls.
