Wed 10. [10 May 1899] Delicious morning with the Black Sea fog in
the distance. Drove through the Forest of Belgrad, most heavenly
green and hot, may all out. Saw aqueducts and bends but the village
is destroyed and Lady Mary W. M.'s house. Storks following the
plough. A German lady came to lunch with our friend and talked of Mr
Spring Rice. Caught the 2.30 boat back to C'ple [Istanbul
(Constantinople)]. Besorged my photographs. Dined at the Pera
Palace with Mr Clulow and Mr Clive. Talked to our Austrian and
Russian friends afterwards. Mr Swingle [Swaigh[?]] also appeared.
