Thurs 11. [11 May 1899] Went to the bazaar and bought carpets. Left by the Orient at 4. Golden afternoon. Baron Türckhheim [sic] our Dörpfeld friend, travels with us. Showed him my photographs. We dined together. Mr Taylor, the Messenger, also in the train and a boring little Board of Works man called Veale, busy examining Embassies. Lots of ponies out of the window.
