Monday 2. [2 August 1897] Walked about Grenoble by myself. Saw
the picture gallery where there are one or two nice things, and an
interesting church with a crypt of the 4th cent. After lunch we bicycled,
Mother Amy Elsa and Hugo drove to a place called Sassenage
where we went to see some most curious caves and passages in the
rock, cut by a little stream. Sat out after dinner waiting for a rehearsal
of the torchlight procession. It came after we went to bed, and at 11 a
concert began which was not conducive to repose.
