Sat 18. [18 April 1896] Breakfasted in bed and got up late having
waited for a room. Strolled out with Caroline to the Duomo and the
lovely fountain. Perfect place - such a misty view over the hill and
valley. The others joined us. Went into the Duomo, horrid place but a
fine Luca Signorelli in it. In all the churches splendid intarsia work.
Lunched Needhams and a daughter of Lady C. Leslie's turned up.
Out to the Cambio where we saw the Perugino frescoes - too fritty! but
a lovely nativity and interesting group with the portrait of Rafael in it
and of Pinturrichio. To San Agostino where delicious intarsia work,
and the splendid Augustan gate and up to a little church at the top of
all from near whence we had a beautiful view with a Franciscan
{convent} monastery and cypresses in the foreground. Home to tea -
all the Needhams came. Rather pleasant. Out with Caroline and Col.
Talbot to San Pietro where a dear old ecclesiastic showed us round.
Dined an enormous party and spent a pleasant evening. The
Needham girls quite nice and he very pleasant.
