Mon. Oct 21 [21 October 1919] Off at 6.10. Road partly sandy but not
bad up to Ma'dan [Ma'din Jadid]. We passed by Sabkhah [As
Sabhkah], saw Raqqah [Ar Raqqah] in the distance and passed by
Ziyarah on the Siffir battlefield. At Ma'dan a Kaldani was working as
carpenter in the Khan where I lunched (we got there about 11). He
described his escape from Mardin and showed me behind the Khan
a deep grave where hundreds of Armenians were buried. Road very
bad from here. At one place a number of graves (Armenians) under
the cliff. The way runs either through sand and tamarisk or over the
rocky hills where it's awful. The worst part is before you reach Tibni
[At Tibni]. We got to Dair [Dayr az Zawr] about 4 when I was put up by
Capt. Chamier. Long talks about the future. The Mayor Haji Fadhil
came to see me.
