Wed 8. [8 June 1898] Coffee brought in to me at 6.30. Got up and dressed by 9. At 11.30 reached Philippopolis [Plovdiv] where we lunched. Delicious day, not too hot. Slept. Lovely grassy Bulgarian country (my tree taken away at the Douane!) people in charming clothes in the fields. Vitosh capped with snow. Got to Sophia [Sofiya] 5.30 and had a bad dinner. Delicious across Slivnitza [Slivnitsa] plain. Half an hour at Tzarigrad; walked about the station. Supper at 9 and so to bed.
