Thurs 9. [9 June 1898] Got to Belgrad [Beograd] at 6.30, woke up and
saw it in the sunshine, then slept till 9.30. Lunch in a dining car at 11.
Reached Pestle at 1 and stayed there till 5.40. Vain efforts to see the
pictures which closed at 1. Drove over the Danube, round the
Blocksberg; walked up the hill, then to the Margarethen Insel where
we had strawberries and ices and so back to the station. Awfully
deserted streets - Fest of some kind on. Bought provisions which we
eat in the train. Tiresome journey slept most of the time. Vienna
[Wien] at 10. Imperial Hotel.
