May 4. [4 May 1898] Got in at 7. Two coolies with plague we afterwards heard. Breakfasted at hotel. Pottering morning. All 4 lunched together. Saw the other two off to Canton [Guangzhou] and went up to Polo Ground. Dined with Mr Whitehead. M. and Madame Giraud, Mr and Mrs Francis, Mr and Mrs Playfair, Mr Nugent, very nice, and two other men. Played Battle. Back in a strange man's chair, Captain Somebody, a polo player I had won his heart by admiring his pony. He walked with me. Scented night.
