Sat. 12. [12 August 1899] Gray [sic] and rather cold. Hugo Mr C
[Chirol] and I went up to Wahnfried and left our letter. There was
empfang (10.30!) but we did not go in. At 11 we all went off in a
carriage and drove to Bernech in the Fichtel Gebirge. It rained as we
went and again as we lunched, but cleared afterwards and we went
for a walk through the charming little town with its burg and up the
valley under pine woods to Stein where there was a ruined castle on
a rock overlooking Bˆchlin like meadows and woods. Mr C.
sketched, we presently left him (after watching the vagaries of a black
rabbit for some time) and walked back over the top of the hill and by
the Burg home. We had coffee and drove away getting in about 7.30.
Dined at the Post and so home to Patiences and bed.
