Sun. 13 [13 August 1899] Hot. Went by tram to Ruprecht Stegen and
walked up the valley of the Peqnitz to Velden passing through a
charming little place called Lungsdorf. The valley most lovely; we
went up into the top of the rocks and had a lovely view over upland
meadows and woods with a grey castle on a rock. The country very
broken like Saxon Switzerland. Much difficulty in lunching at Velden
but we finally got eggs, sausage bread and cheese beer and new[?]
wine which made F [Florence] and me very drunk. No time to walk on
to Neuhaus so we took the train, it was 1/2 hour late, and came home
arriving at 5.30. Very hot. Had tea in a conditorei and so home.
Dined at the Burg above the theatre with the Moberly Bells - out of
doors and it got very dark for there was only a tiny slip of moon.
Nasty dinner. We met Miss Weisse and Tovey. M. Bell told a funny
story: Lord Cromer said to him once: I like Nabar Pasha but he has no
tact. And Nabar confided: You know Cromer is a very good fellow it's
a pity he can't speak the truth. Walked home, delicious starry
evening.
