Thurs. 16. [16 August 1894] Elsa Molly and I went out at 7 and bathed
in the lake. Most heavenly - as we swam out into the open we looked
across the great sheet of water to a battlement of Alps; snowy
maciolated [sic], like a great hoary fortress. The sun shone hot upon
us, the water was quite warm, Elsa and I swam about and enjoyed
ourselves mightily. Left Z¸rich at 10.40. Most lovely journey over the
Vor Arlberg. We lunched in the train and spent most of the day
looking out of window. Arrived at Innsbr¸ck at 5.30 and drove up to
Villa Edelweiss which looks charming. We have a delightful balcony
which we intend to use as a sitting room. No letters for me! - but it was
not to be expected that there should be. Found that the Rosens had
called and are in a pension quite near. So after dinner we went to call
on them, conducted by our host along mysterious forest paths where
the glow worms were the only attempt at illumination. We found the
dear Rosens and Charlotte - after having been conducted into some
one else's dark bedroom and having passed through a horrible fear
that we might disturb our friends in bed! We sat and talked and then
they all walked back with us and we made plans for meeting on the
morrow. Unpacked and so to bed.
