Thurs 4. [4 December 1902] Talked all morning to the Dundases, Mr
Robertson, Miss Muir, Mrs Moncrieff, Byngs Gascoynes etc. Got to
Suez at 12 - rather sorry to get out of the Canal which is enchanting. A
real gold and blue Egyptian morning, warm and heavenly; I got into
white. Robertson is irrigating and peopling Scinde, a wonderful job.
He comes into country as bare as the deck and sees it a sea of corn
after 18 months. After tea I went with Mr Schuster to the 2nd class deck
and watched an admirable sunset, the sea a pale violet and the sky a
dark reddish purple and the silver crescent of the new moon above
all. There was a great mountain away in the SW which stood out
against a yellow band of sky. After dinner the 2 Ms came and had a
rubber with us. Mrs Lawrence introduced me to Mrs Hugh Barnes.
