Thurs March 1. [1 March 1900] Fine at last. Thank heaven February
is over. Walked down to the Bir Ayoub after lunch and photographed.
On my way I was caught by a gardener who took me into the
Sandretskys house and sold me plants. Then by Abdul Rahim
outside the new post office and so I went in and shook hands with the
post uncles[?] and bought stamps to celebrate the occasion. All the
Germans came down to Bir Ayoub. The people were sitting all along
the edge of the stream drinking coffee and catching frogs. The Silwan
people came down and bathed in the Bir and prayed by the river.
Hessenthals, Hoppes, Bˆttcher, Schwerin dined but left early.
