Photograph of Zakho, Iraq, taken November 1922

Description

British levied troops at salute at Levy camp. The Levies are Imperial forces. 350 Assyrians....now guarding our furthest outpost. Smartly they came to salute as we entered the camp; Khaki clad, the meagrest of shorts revealing the finest pairs of mountaineers legs, broad hatted, the brims cocked up with a white or a scarlet feather, they looked for all the world like large sized Gurkhas
