Photograph taken by Gertrude Bell in Myanmar, February 1903

Description

Paper and bamboo elephant, three smaller model elephants, hung with streamers on float on River Irrawaddy, surrounded by villagers. "There was a great function going forward on the river. They were launching a raft on which there was a bamboo and paper elephant the size of life and 3 little white elephants. The whole village was hanging them with streamers and flowers and umbrellas to the sound of cymbals and one, who spoke Urdu, told me it was to float down to the sea.".
