Photograph taken by Gertrude Bell in Iraq, April 1911

Description

Palace - S Liwan - interior wall with sculptured heads on pilaster and projecting moulding. (Plain back wall (to left of photograph) possibly a later addition.) "And more curious still, high up on the walls in the interior of the halls they set huge human heads in groups of three, and these too are sometimes dimly classical, a Medusa head, a bearded river god; and sometimes they are wild and staring masks, scarcely human."
