Dear Miss Bell

Many thanks for the MS and photographs. We will print the two [?] as a plate; the large plan will also have to be a plate, as it will have a fold.

I am asking Anderson to doctor 4 of your photographs before we have blocks made, as otherwise certain details will be quite lost. But you shall see them when he has operated on them, and if you disapprove of his medicaments they can be washed off.

Most of your Oriental Catalogues are out of print (see enclosed list, pp.7-8). For your purpose I should recommend the Berlin Catalogue:

Kon. Museen zu Berlin: Katalog der Orientalischen Munzen.

I[?] Bd. (mit 7 Tafeln).

Die Munzen der Ostlichen Chalifen. 25 Mk. (Berlin, W. Spemann, 1898).

II[?]. Bd. (6 Tafeln). Munzen der Muslimischen Dynastieen Spaniens [?]. 20 Mk (the same, 1902).

I suppose it would be the first vol. only that would interest you.

I am going to have the originals of your plans sent direct to you from our blockmaker by rail.

Yours sincerely,

G.F. Hill

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
