My dear Gertrude –

A most welcome wire from “Kanichebagad” arrived saying “flourishing letters Damascus” – It must be you of course but where is Kanichebagad – I guess it is Baghdad – Oh my dear I am glad & more relieved than I can say – el Hamdo lillah! Glory be – But shall I write to Damascus – surely not – you will have left for London by the time this slow scraping post reaches – yet for my pleasure I shall wire tomorrow to Damascus a word.

But what adventures what days you have had – Well now I shall hear & be in peace in so far as hearing gives it –

No time to write for the mail goes – We’ve only just got here - & are still sitting down slowly in our places –

Dear Queen of the Desert welcome back

Dick

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
