C'ple [Istanbul (Constantinople)]. Pera Palace Tuesday Dearest Father. Today I accomplished the most important object of my visit here - I saw the Grand Vizier. He is a very great man, is Ferid Pasha, and I strongly suspect that he will play a large part in Turkey, very possibly mould Turkish history at some time or other; and he is a very interesting man. Moreover he was more kind to me than words can say - I enjoyed my visit! He has promised me his unfailing protection and I believe I shall get it. I've certainly had it so far. He received me in his house, Mr Fitzmaurice took me there - yes, it was most successful. I then spent the day with Mr Fitzmaurice who knows more about Turkey than most people, and we talked without stopping till 7 o'clock in the evening when he went away. He is a nervous little red haired Irishman, and a great friend of Mr Lloyd's. I like him particularly. Tomorrow I am to spend the afternoon with Hamdy Beg at his house on the Bosphorus [Karadeniz Bogazi (Bosporus)] and from there I am going on to Therapia where I stay the night at the Embassy. On Thursday I lunch in C'ple with Mr Graves, a brother of our Cairo friend; he is at the Embassy, a nice boy. And on Friday I go to Graz. Meantime Fattuh is rapidly recovering and I very much hope that he may be out of hospital by the time I leave. That's a great comfort; I was so afraid there might be something terrible the matter with him which would need an operation and a long business.
There are troops of professors and people of that kind here who have all been to see me. I find it vastly entertaining!
By the bye I like this hotel better than any other I've been to here. The rooms are so much less stuffy which at this time of year is important. It's very hot - sticky, muggy. I expect I shall be in London about the 7th or 8th and I should be most grateful if Marie could be sent up to meet me then. I shall have to stay a day or two to get some clothes. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude
