Kuyujuk [Kuyucak] Ap 21 Dearest Father. I was most glad to get your letter about Elsa's engagement which reached me just as I left Aidin [Aydin]. One feels as if one can't have letters enough! but you have all been most angelic about writing to me. Now what do you think I ought to do? Elsa tells me they think of being married in the beginning of July. Well my firman for the diggings is from the middle of May till the middle of July. That means I can't possibly be home before the beginning of August - I daresay even a week or two later than that. It's really a very difficult question. I think I can scarcely leave old Ramsay after having undertaken to see this thing through. What do you think? You see he has no one else but me to do the work and I've said I would do it and there it is. I think it's really for you and Mother to decide. If you tell me to come back, Ramsay will understand that I must go. I'm quite ready to do exactly what you like. I shouldn't hesistate if I only were concerned, but I do feel rather at a loss to know what I ought to do, things being as they are. I shall go on to Konia [Konya (Iconium)] anyway and you must write to me there. I haven't written anything to Ramsay for I doubt if I shall catch him before he leaves England. If I came back I would tell him that I should pay all the expenses as agreed and after all perhaps that's the main point. Only he would have to get someone else to do the report, or book, or whatever we make of it. I couldn't do that without having been on the spot through all the work.
Now I shall think of it no more till I get to Konia and hear from you.

I was delighted to get Mother's excellent Romiches. The Guardian is particularly good. I suppose she does not want these back? I have kept them in case she does. I am glad it's being taken the right way. You were very wrong not to put your money into the Maeander [Büyük Menderes] valley! You can't think what a wonderful place it is.
