March 30 Government House, Singapore. Dearest Father. A delightful series of letters has reached us here - we are off tomorrow and I will only write you a word to tell you that we are flourishing. H. [Hugo] looks very thin but his doctor says the week in the ship - it's more than a week - will set him up and I'm glad for his sake that we are leaving tropics. I'm really quite sorry to be going away. As soon as Hugo was out of the wood it became very pleasant staying here, and it has been nice to have a few peaceful days in a comfortable house. I have done nothing because there was nothing to do. Sat in Hugo's room all day, driven with Sir Frank after tea and played Bridge all night. There is a Mrs Caulfield staying here who is a nice little woman. She also plays Bridge. I have made great friends with my host who is a curious and interesting person. He has been kind to us! We've got to feel that we are really doing him a service by being ill in his house. We now go as straight as possible to Pekin [Beijing (Peking)], not stopping at Hong Kong. And it's too hot to write more.
Your NER reports most interesting and we loved your China letter. I have a charming letter from Elsa with some admirable portraits of Him - Amram, I mean. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude.

I think H. had a narrow shave of typhoid! did I tell you that? however it's successfully avoided.
