95 Sloane Street Tuesday. Dearest Father. I had a very wise letter from you this morning, forwarded from Rosenlaui. I quite agree with all you say - but you know we didn't do it on purpose. The thing was not an outrageous thing, but weather one can't control, and we had to do the best we could. Still, I'm glad we're through it so easily. I dined with Domnul last night and had a very interesting talk about his Persian plans. Today I lunched with the Strongs. Mr S. wants me to write a book in a series on art he is editing. I don't think I can, but I'll tell you all about it and take your advice. We spoke much of you, in admiring terms. I've been consulting with Butler's man about the garden. The cypresses are quite dead and I think we shall have to adopt your plan of a trellis and ivy to hide Mrs D. Ambrose is just coming to talk about it and we'll take measurements. Aunt Bessie and I arrive on Thursday at 5.20. I polish off my dentist[?] on Thursday morning before starting. Caroline has gone to a little inn in Cumberland, Stanley Ghill, Boot. She wants you and me to come over and see her. I said we would. I dine with Sybil tonight. I'm very eager to hear where the Bodley matters are. You have not told me whether they let the 2nd slip by. However I shall hear on Thursday. The N.E. Gazette is sickening. I bound everyone over not to send any account to the papers - I don't know what more I cd do. It's most annoying. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
