Thursday. Suez. Dearest Father. We got your letter and Mother's and the Times at Port Said and were most grateful for them. The Osiris was delayed 12 hours by extraordinarily bad weather - we just missed it! - and we did not get off till 8 at night. We thought it possible that we might see the Good Hope before we left, but it did not come; it was delayed also by the weather. Hugo and I took a long walk in the afternoon all along the breakwater, nearly 2 miles. We felt rather as if we were on the Tees breakwater! After dinner there was a concert; Hugo accompanied Susan and they were certainly the success of the evening. I was so glad I had dragged him into it. We were running through the Canal - you know it's a wonderful sight at night. You go with a great electric search light hooked on in front which clears about 40 yards of the canal, no 100 yards or more, as bright as day - and the rest of the world darkness. It was bitter cold as it always is in the desert. We are just reaching Suez, 10.15 - a heavenly morning with gold and blue Egyptian light and really warm.
Do you remember years ago calling on Mrs Johnnie Dundas who received us very coldly and told us her son was just coming back from India? While we had tea he came and we thought he was so glad not to find only his family! This Mr Dundas is that very son! I suddenly remembered the incident and reminded him of it and he remembered also. Oh the sun and the light in this heavenly desert!

My poor little dog! I daresay he has forgotten by now. Ever your very affectionate daughter Gertrude
