[13 May 1918] Baghdad May 13 Darling Father. Captain Roosevelt is going to France tomorrow and has offered to take a parcel for me. So I send you a small Turkman saddle cloth which I hope you will like. I've lived with it a year and love it more and more. Also a bit of Persian embroidery for Mother which is quite pretty, and 2 little Jof saddlebag pieces for Maurice - they too are the best of their kind I've seen here. Belloved family I can't send best enough to tell you all I feel about you. I expect Capt. Roosevelt will go into the American army in France. He is right to go, but I'm sorry to lose him. He is such a delightful creature - just the right sort of gallant young soldier. I've told him if he is in London to ask the Pages where to find you. I'm certain you would like him.
Bless you all! I'm in the middle of a terrific morning! everyone in Baghdad seems to have chosen today to come in with information or petitions. Ever your very affectionate Gertrude
