July 21st 1874 Red Barns Coatham, Redcar. My dearest Papa. Pilcher has got on very well with our garden, he has done half the kitchen garden. The hens are not laying us any eggs. We went and waded yesterday and we are going to wade today. Stevie was here yesterday. We waded in the morning and Stevie came in the afternoon and he had tea with us. The rabbits are getting on very well. Will you write us a letter in return We have been very good while you have been away. Maurice every day at dinner asks why the pineapple isn't coming in. Stevie stayed to have tea with us. He soon after went away a little time before tea we tried to harness Sherwyn[?] in the cart but we didn't succeed. After we wash this evening we are going to run in the sands barefoot. We shall go out with our spades and pails and boats and we shall dig a hole and let the water run in. before that when we have dug our hole we shall put water in to make it muddy, cause we think its better to have our own water first before the sea runs in with its own strength and power. Stevie was very amused with the Kittens. We had the Rabbits as well and they stayed very quiet in the cart all tea time: we had tea out of doors. We put them on to Stevies crib too. he was very amused with them - one thing particuly [sic] we put the Kittens in and directly we'd got them in they ran away and Stevie laughed very much. Gertrude.
