Sep 7 Wales My dear Papa We have been to Penmaenmawr to see such nice little girls called Empson. We went up a high mountain covered with lovely heather and we had great fun. Horace drove the pony to the station and I drove it home. One night we played at schoolmaster and Maurice was master, and he laid in to us when we did nothing at all. The blackberries are nearly ripe, and there are such lots. we went to gather some yesterday, but we found very few. Maurice and I send our love and lots of kisses to you and Mama from your loving child Gertrude

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
