6 May 95 Sloane Street. Dearest Mother. We arrived today at 6 after a most prosperous journey; we had a perfect crossing, cold, but quite smooth. We arrived pennyless! I had to borrow 6d from Colonel Firebrace who came to meet Caroline at Charing Cross! We had very little to eat on the way because we were so afraid we should not have enough money, so I was furiously hungry when I got here. However after a large dinner, I feel better.
The children look most flourishing, it's so delightful to find them here. And I'm charmed to hear that you are coming up next week - that is really nice.

Tell Papa I only ordered him ´ a dozen pairs of gloves because they were so light I wasn't sure he wd like them. They had no darker ones and said they never kept them, which I don't Bellieve is true. I was so grateful for all the papers. Isn't it sad about Mr Hunt! I will tell Papa what he owes Caroline tomorrow I'm too sleepy now. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
