Thursday. Siena We have been blessed with a fine day which was all the more delicious after yesterday's experience at Orvieto. It's a real pleasure coming to a place one knows - I have enjoyed seeing Siena a second time immensely. There are such a mass of beautiful things here - we shall have nearly the whole of tomorrow for we don't leave for Florence [Firenze] till 4. For once we shall travel by daylight - Italian trains are generally so arranged that unless you start at daybreak you have to pass through the loveliest country by night. C. [Caroline] wants to stop a night in Paris on our way home. I think it will be a good plan, for it will break our journey and that will be a distinct advantage for her. G.B.
I have not been favoured with many letters!
