Tuesday. 90 Sloane Street. Dearest Mother. Elsa is much better. There has been a fog all day and she has stayed in. She is much brisker. Last night at the Tyrrells I sat next M. de Manneville whom I was glad to see again. He's an interesting little end of a man. He's going to fly to see us in the summer. The Phippses were also dining. We had a long talk about Billy - she is a charming woman! She is very despairing about his prospectrs. She says Lady S. is charming but very indolent, very delicate and has no notion of how poor people live. Up to now she has spent her whole allowance in clothes, and it will now have to support half a household! She hears rumours that they are to be married in 6 weeks in Canada, but does not think this can be true. She thinks it a great pity that it has been made so public. They apparently telegraphed to all their relations and Mrs Lawrence Drummond telegraphed to half a dozen acquaintances. Mrs Phipps thought that very odd indeed. After dinner came a tail[?] of Russells Grant Duffs etc. Amongst them Mr Landon, a new acquaintance of mine. I don't like him much but he amuses me extremely. He is coming to tea tomorrow to show me photographs of Athens [Athinai].
I skated all this morning and had a Persian lesson after tea. I'm going to the Russells this evening. The Firebraces were also dining with the Tyrrells, Mrs Albert Gray and the Bellgian minister. A most agreeable dinner.
They have asked Hugo Elsa and me to go in next Monday to a tail. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
