Paris. Nov 29 Dearest Mother. Most prosperous so far. The Channel like a lake. The boat was full of Anglo Indians - there's a P&O leaving Marseilles [Marseille] tomorrow. Very funny being in the middle of them all and hearing them talk of England like foreigners who longed to be more English than the English. At Calais I got myself put into the P&O train by mistake and was turned out of my compartment by 2 irate old Generals whom I had watched walking up and down on the boat. Finally we all apologized, but the honours of war remained with them as I expect they always do. I however got a most comfortable compartment to myself in the right train and slept most of the way to Paris.
I've just changed into my Marseilles train - horrid full - I've got another woman in my compartment. She looks like a nurse, bother her. I'm now going to dine. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
