Tuesday Hotel des Alpes Saint Michel Dearest Mother. I'm just going to telegraph to you to announce my safe arrival. My luggage turned up, I got to Geneva [Genève] at 5, left at 7.30 this morning and arrived here at 2. The daily coach leaves at 10 AM, so shall take it tomorrow morning. Meantime I was not sorry to break off here for the journey had been long. I had a carriage to myself last night and slept very well considering that it was the most noisy and bangy train I ever was in. It was very beautiful this morning; the Lac du Bouget [Lac du Bourget] looked lovely and all that valley so smiling and delicious. Tell Amy she had become a sort of heroic legend here. I asked the woman of the inn if she remembered our all coming two years ago - Ah oui! she said "et une dame, une très grande dame!" She sent the children her respects and wished that they had come back too - and so do I!
I'm going to return you La Terre[?] qui Meurt which is most excellent. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude

Tell Elsa I looked fondly at the little station from whence we bicycled!
