Sunday In the train. Dearest Mother. I had a most successful afternoon with Mrs Ward yesterday. Their villa is a vision of beauty, looking over the Alban Lake on one side and the Campagna on the other. It's a Barberini Villa with an exquisite big garden in which are the ruins of a Villa of Domitian's. There are long ilex avenues and the grass was full of violets and cyclamen and anemones. The rooms of course very bare, but they have carpeted them and put in stoves and they are most fascinating. Mrs Ward was extremely kind. I arrived about 4 and stayed till 8 - it's only an hour from Rome [Roma]. She and I walked about on the Terraces till tea, after which she took me into her sitting room and showed me her preface to Jane Eyre, very good I thought - so did she! "Now this is so true" she said, pointing to a passage in an impersonal way! Never mind, she was a great dear. Violet Freeman is staying with them and Mrs Green comes this week. They pressed me to return after Athens [Athinai]. I shd have liked to have stayed with them, though the atmosphere is a little rarified. I went into the Russie on my way home and spent half an hour with the dear Lushingtons and then to bed without writing to you for I was tired. I left Rome at 8.20 this morning - with such a pang! all the Bells were ringing and it was the most lovely Easter morning. I have had a most prosperous journey all by myself in a through carriage. I arrive at 9.44, in two hours and when I have met Papa I will post this. So that you will know when you get it that all is well. I have no G.G. book but Robertson. The 2 Men of Mendip was either returned to the GG or sent to Papa in which case it is at Redcar. Ever your aff daughter Gertrude.
