Tuesday 28. Dearest Mother. We have had another perfect day here - our last, alas! We went first to Cook's and bought our tickets to England, which was a relief to our minds, then after wandering about a little we spent the rest of the morning at the Pitti in a most enjoyable manner. After lunch we sat at home and wrote letters and talked for a little (I wrote to Grandmamma and asked her if I might come to 95 on the 6th and I also sent her a little box of roses) after which we went to Santa Croce - it's awfully interesting seeing Giotto here after Padua [Padova] and Assisi. Then we had an agreeable tea at Giacosa's, poked about in curiosity shops where Caroline made some purchases, looked into Or San Michele where I wanted to see the Orcagna tabernacle, and the Badia where there is a picture that I love and some delightful tombs. Now Caroline is drawing San Miniato out of my window, we dine out at a most delightful restaurant which is cheaper than our inn, and come home to a peaceful last evening. I shall be so sorry to leave this nice little room on the Arno and I shall miss the Belloved San Miniato and the cypresses round it so much! I have enjoyed these days here wildly. Tell Papa I have looked in all the shops and not yet seen a brass pot like the one we bought in Venice [Venezia]. They are all much bigger. But I still hope I may find one in Milan [Milano].
I had a most amusing letter from Elsa this morning - what fun for them to have QC with them! I wonder how she likes it. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude

I am so much saddened about poor Uncle Tom!
