June 10 Baghdad Dearest Mother. I'm so glad you liked Esme. I have sent her your letter, but it would have been quicker to look up Sir Henry's address in Who's Who, wouldn't it! However we were amused at her hearing from you via Baghdad. She was delighted to meet you. I always meant to ask you whether you read Fidelity by Susan Glaspell - of course you did, and didn't you think it excellent? I haven't yet had Lisa's book or seen it reviewed and as for Lady Oxford, I think I shall wait till I come back to read it. I don't for a moment believe it is as good as the Times says it is. I am glad I shall see Norah this summer. You will miss her when Elsa reclaims her I'm afraid - on the other hand it will be delightful to have Elsa and her family back. Will Herbert be out of a job, I wonder, for a time? The AVM, who is his great admirer, longs to see him First Sea Lord. It was nice to see Willie Tyrrell's decoration - better deserved, I think, than Percy Loraine's, for between ourselves the latter had been thoroughly bamboozled by Riza Khan about the Shaikh of Muhammarah and keeps writing enormous despatches to prove that he hasn't. He may have succeeded in convincing H.M.G. but not us. I've written to Father, this is just a word of greeting. Your very affectionate daughter Gertrude.
