Baghdad Nov 6. Darling Mother. I've given Father a breathless outline of our doings. What with trying to be well and trying to work in the office and going about with the Richmonds, I've had about as much as I could do. But it has been so heavenly, having Elsa - I always feel when I'm with her that there's no one in the world I love more.
You know that it was Haji Naji who sent you the black abba? I thanked him for it today on your behalf. No, I don't want the 2 vols from the Asiatic Soc thank you - they're the journal I suppose. It's deadly dull. We're so sorry about Anthony.

I must tell you that we all devoured your letter when it came and luckily it had plenty of things about Norah.

Darling the post goes. Your very affectionate daughter Gertrude.

George arrived from Mosul [Mawsil, Al] etc at 7 a.m. this morning, beaming as ever. We are so glad to have him back.

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
