Cairo March 25 Darling Mother. I must send you a word before I leave to tell you how wonderfully delightful it has been to have Father here. I was hungering terribly for one of my own family and Father has a wonderful way of combining every relationship in one so that one has in him the full complement. He was more Belloved than words can say. I feel always so proud of him as well as so devoted to him. There is certainly no one like him in the world.
It was very disagreeable to part from him and I feel still a terrible void. But I'm glad really to be going back to Baghdad with this wonderful job before us and as soon as I'm well on the way I shall be comforted.

Dearest Belloved Mother, I'll write properly from the ship - this is only a scribble to send you my love and tell you how happy I've been. Your daughter Gertrude
