Feb 17 Basrah [Basrah, Al (Basra)] Dearest Mother. The box and the umbrella have come too! isn't it great. I am so thankful for shoes, shirts, umbrella (we're in the middle of rain) silk coat and everything. If only that rogue hadn't stolen my black gown I should be well supplied till the hot weather comes.
You have taken such a lot of trouble in the midst of your innumberable occupations - thank you so very much. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude

I've written my news, such as it is, to Father.
