Clandon Nov 12 Dearest Mother. I find your letter at the house, so I write again. Here is Stewart's letter. I fear we are not to have the whole lot for nearly 3 weeks. Elsa and I are prepared to share them between us. If anyone else contributes, then we had better pay each of us half of the balance - thus Mrs Jones's £3 would knock off 30/ from each of us. Don't you think that's the best plan. As for paying, the best way perhaps is for you to deduct from the bill any contributions and then tell Elsa and me what our share comes to when we will send you our cheques. Or if you like to send the bill to me and Mrs Jones's cheque, or whatever the contributions are, I'll communicate with Elsa and send the cheque myself. G.

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
