Sat. Rome [Roma] Dearest Mother. I really think if you don't mind, I shall stay on here a week or two longer and do some work. I'm just going out to dinner so I haven't time to explain, but you will realize from what I told you that these Roman things seem to me more and more important and if I took 3 weeks now over them I should begin to see where I am.
But if you want me to come back, send me a telegram and I will come. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
