Rounton Grange October 3 Dearest Mother. I have written to the de Bunsens, but I almost think it would be better not to ask the Mark Sykeses with them - well after all no, I don't suppose it matters; only there seemed to be so many travellers in Mesopotamia all at the same time! Anyhow it would be a very good thing to have got the Sykeses asked and I will write to them, trusting that they will not be like Palgrave and the Blunts.
What a good thing you had called on Mrs Bainbridge! then you have asked them to come on the 18th and shoot on the 19th?
We had a very pleasant dinner party last night - Newbolts and Darwins. Horace, Maurice and Oliver all decided that Miss Darwin is more ugly than it is permitted to be, but I think they exaggerate as they admit that she is quite agreeable. We might ask them for that Sunday, the 16th? We shall have to ask her again some time.
Anyhow I go to Scotland tonight, so will you write to me to Corrom, Invernessshire. Hugo tells me that I can only get through to Moll's next Saturday by motoring from Morpeth where I arrive at 9.40 PM. If Father thinks the Delaunay could not meet me at Morpeth that night, all would be well. I shall bring much luggage. He might send me a p.c. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
