95 Sloane Street Tuesday. Dearest Mother. I distinguished myself this morning by leaving my purse at W'bury! Wasn't it stupid. Fortunately they found it and telegraphed me news of it to N'allerton [Northallerton] while I was still blissfully unconscious of its loss. At York I hid successfully from Mr Lang.
I've spent the afternoon shopping. It's wonderful what a lot of odds and ends one wants when one has been out of London for 2 months. Also I shopped presents for Pauline and Geordie.
The photographs I took at Cambo are excellent. I won't send them to you because I want to have the pleasure of showing them myself.
It's very warm here - with bursts of heavy rain. Ever your very affectionate daughter Gertrude
Sophie loq: (with chastened satisfaction) - "And it all went off very well and she looked so nice!" That's the ..... mother.

Evolving Hands is a collaborative digital scholarship project between Newcastle University and Bucknell University which explores the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and Text Encoded Initiative (TEI XML) to enhance cultural heritage material. In this project, we have applied these methods to a selection of letters from the Gertrude Bell Archive.
