Aug 14. Red Barns, Coatham, Redcar. Dearest Mother. I'm so glad you have decided to go to Ratisbon [Regensburg]. I don't know which are your reading glasses so I have sent you two pairs which Lizzie produced. I hope one of them is right. We are a most agreeable party. The Pollocks arrived after dinner last night. Today was very stormy, however we sat in the garden in the morning, then Aunt Bessie and Lady P. walked into the town and Sir F. and I along the links. After lunch we all went to Clarence where Father appeared in his excellent rôle of showman. I left them there and came back at 4 to croquet M le Strange and Father brought the Ps in at 5. We had a brilliant tea party, Mr le S. and Sir Fred are delightful together and most amusing and Father seems to be entertained. As to Aunt Bessie she loves them, especially Mr le Strange. The Pollocks stay till after dinner tomorrow. Susan is acquitting herself valiantly. Hedley says Aunt Bessie is really better and that mountains will be the best thing in the world for her. I think she will stay here till the 24th. Hedley is coming down to see her again. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
