Dec 21. Red Barns, Coatham, Redcar. Dearest Father. I was delighted to get your telegram and to know that you sanctioned my bold doings. Here is another letter from Mr Wortley - I really think he ought to receive a handsome commission! He has taken a lot of trouble, hasn't he. I've said that Caroline must decide about the Irish terrier and asked whether he has heard nothing from Mr Hardy. Hugo and I are going to R'ton [Rounton] tonight. We return tomorrow after hunting. I flew out this morning and bought presents for the children at the Infirmary after which I repaired to Middlesbrough and distributed them, so you see I have not been idle. My dog is better. I think he is going to pull through all right but he has grown so terrible fast that he has no strength left. I haven't got a photograph of him except those stuck into a book, but I send one of Tavish and Elsa to show to your nurse. You will find at the H.C. Hotel a small parcel addressed to you, but you are not to open it till Christmas Day - shape of a book, large and thin. Ever your very affectionate daughter Gertrude
