Monday 22 British Embassy, Berlin. Dearest Mother. I have had the most amusing morning. I went out sightseeing with Miss Pereira - Aunt Mary and Florence had a committee so I was told off to amuse her. We went to some pictures and then she said she wanted to see the Schloss. When we got there we found we had 20 minutes to wait before the next party went round. We were rather bored but there seemed nothing for it and we sat down patiently. As we were waiting, one of the court people, Count Brühl (I think) came in and found us and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was waiting for the Führer to which he replied "Oh you mustn't think of doing that, I will take you round." So he conducted us round in state and it was the greatest fun for he is a perfectly charming person and he took us everywhere and knew everything and told us delightful stories. Wasn't it a piece of luck! I was so much entertained and Miss Pereira of course was charmed as she saw the things that are not shown to tourists and under much more agreeable conditions. She seems nice; she is about 35 and she knows a lot of patiences, some of which she taught us yesterday evening. We all went to a musical party last night at the Schwabachs. The music was quite excellent; Scheidemantel sang some wonderful Brahms songs and Ben Davies some Schumann - quite beautifully. The latter had been brought over from England expressly to sing at this party and he told the D.T. correspondent that he would willingly come every week on similar terms for he had never in his life received such a fee! They are rolling, the Schwabachs and their one desire is to get into society which is quite impossible as they are Jews and not Hoffähig. A lot of the chers collègues were there, but the rest of the party was extremely sketchy. I enjoyed the concert; Castenskjold was sitting next me and he was a very nice companion for he loved it and didn't talk while Scheidenmantel was singing! He also took me in to supper - a function which would otherwise have been rather tedious, for one can't eat much at 11 when one had dined at 8 and supper on these occasions lasts nearly an hour! Afterwards there was dancing; we stayed for a little, but came away before the cotillon - you understand, the society was too mixed for our Excellencies!
When we came in we found Lord Granville and Lord Elphinstone playing picquet and we stayed and watched their game for some time before we went [letter incomplete]
