Sunday. Berlin. Dearest Mother. I am delighted about Heinemann - what for a discriminating gentleman! I have written to Lisa and told her I long to see Mariana on Tuesday night - I suppose there are no theatres on Ash Wednesday.
Florence and I played golf all yesterday afternoon; it was delicious weather and we loved being out. I shall want to spend a whole week out of doors when I come home, we don't have nearly enough fresh air here. Last night was the Court fancy dress ball. We went to see the Radziwills dressed - the Ferdinands. It was exactly like a scene in a Russian novel. They were all having tea and the corners of the room were filled up with a collection of nondescript hangers on, tutors and governesses and doctors, most of them of the same date as the fancy dresses - 1797! The girl, Princess Aga, were a costume copied from a portrait of her great grandmother and was so exactly like the picture that it made one jump. I was much amused to hear one of the old nondescripts telling her that he had known the lady she represented in 1821! We went on to see the Lynars who also looked extremely nice. The Colonel dined with us and we had a very pleasant evening. This afternoon a lot of girls are coming to tea and F. and I are going to give them a bicycling lesson in the ball room! Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
