Friday 6th [6 January 1905] Got to Marseille at 9.34 - bright cold day.
Walked down to the Hotel du Louvre where I deposited my things.
Then out along the Prado to the Parc BorÈly where I saw the MusÈe
ArchÈologique. Nothing very much in it, but some early Xian
sarcophagi I was glad to see. A fine one from Arles with sphynxes on
it - I suppose it must have been classical with a Xian inscription, for it
had centaurs on the other side. And another quite Xian with stags
drinking at the fountain of life on the lid. Very cold with a bitter wind.
Lunched and went on board the Ortona after waiting about some time
on the quai. Very comfortable ship. I have a companion, a Miss
Berkeley who never leaves her bed. We got off about 6. It was
roughish at first, then quite quiet. Mrs Peake retired to bed and I dined
with Mr Osborne. Sat on deck after and read. The prize runners took
excercise [sic] across my feet.
