Fri. 21. [21 April 1899] But the night was awful and the quantity of bugs
past belief. Started at 7. Themistocles unable to travel. Walked the
first 2 hours; up and down hill. We passed through a charming valley
with plane trees and a stream. Fine views of Erymanthus
[Erimanthos] and Cythaeron. Lunched at 11.30 at a horrid little place.
Then along a lovely path through woods and so onto the road. We
met 2 ladies going to Bassae; we stopped and talked to them.
{Forded} Crossed the Alpheus [Alfios] in a ferry boat and arrived at
Olympia at 6. Dˆrpfeld and his party and the Grand Duke of Hesse
here, some difficulty in getting rooms, but we got them at last. Ran
down to see the Hermes and then dined. Delicious night and clean
rooms.
