Thurs 20. [20 April 1899] Up at 5.30. Lovely sunrise. Off at 6.50 and
for 11/2 hours over on yesterday's road then straight up the hill.
Periwinkles blue anemones, wild pear. Themistocles took the
baggage by another road; he was swept off his saddle by a branch
and is very much bruised and very sorry for himself. (Our dinner
suffered in consequence.) At last the temple of Bassae showed over
the shoulder. Exquisite, nearly perfect, even a few feet of the inner
wall left showing a curious construction of the inner pillars engaged in
wall. Photographed and lunched though it was only 10.30. Finally,
went to sleep under a tree for 11/2 hours during part of which time
Papa and Uncle Tom looked for me, poor dears. There was some
cloud and a good deal of haze. Parnassus [Parnassos] and
Taygetus [Taiyetos Oros] we cd see, Ithome [Ithomi] standing out
finely and the sea to the west. Left Bassae at 2 and got to
Andritsaena [Andritsaina] at 4.30. Bare oaks growing all round the
temple, not out yet, and very stumpy. A cuckoo was singing loudly.
From the ridge about Andritsaena we saw Parnassus, the
Acharnaean mts and Ithaca [Ithaki]. Charming village running up the
hill we are very well lodged. Letters here for us. After tea Papa and I
photographed groups of the people.
